Community Fund grants bring more colour and movement to Broome

A beautiful mural painted by locals, new gear for the triathlon club, support for First Nations content creators and even restoration of two 103-year-old rickshaws are projects bringing more colour and movement to the town of Broome with funding support proudly pledged by EDL.

This year EDL and the @Shire of Broome Council have pledged to support 32 community-based projects in the remote West Kimberley region of Western Australia, through grants from a shared Community Development Fund (CDF) program.

In 2012, EDL established a $1 million community fund as part of our West Kimberly Power Project, which has supplied reliable gas-fired electricity to the towns of Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek for Horizon Power since 2008.

Allocations from EDL’s West Kimberley Community Fund are facilitated through the Shire of Broome Council’s CDF program.  Overall, approximately $150,000 will be provided to 32 projects in 2024.

This year, recipients of EDL grants are the Broome Men’s Shed Inc. (for restoration of two 103-year-old traditional Chinese rickshaws), the Broome Tri Club (for new equipment), Helping Minds (for a new community mural at Town Beach) Incredible Edible Broome (for a sustainable food event), and Sharing Stories Foundation Ltd (for a media hub and First Nations content creator mentorships).

EDL’s West Kimberley Power Project includes a 10 terajoule (TJ) per day liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Karratha. LNG is trucked from the plant to small gas-fired power stations at each of the supported towns. The project also includes a 61 megawatt (MW) power station in Broome that is connected by pipeline to a nearby LNG storage and re-gasification facility.

EDL’s West Kimberley Community Fund supports not-for-profit initiatives aligned with the principles of social cohesion, inclusiveness, equal opportunity, community wellbeing and long-term community development.
